Voluntourism, A Shameful Business
Does voluntourism do more harm than good? Teaching English in Nepal, counting elephants in Botswana; paid volunteer missions abroad are very popular with young people. Many of them, full of enthusiasm, fall into the trap. Behind the supposedly positive impact of voluntourism, hides a very profitable business with many ill effects. More than 85% of the children in Nepal's orphanages have in fact been separated from their families. Our journalist infiltrated a Project Abroad mission in Tanzania, and found out how 16 year olds with no medical skills were attending surgical operations during the day before getting drunk in trendy bars as soon as night fell. This report investigates the excesses of a shameful business on the margins of humanitarian aid.
