French Suburb, A No-Go Zone?

Watch Video
PDF
How to take a fresh take on French suburbs? Are they really the no-go zones that some politicians thrive on? Last October, an attack of unprecedented brutality put France in turmoil: about fifteen young people used Molotov cocktails to set fire to police vehicles in the Grande Borne suburb, south of Paris. These events are part of a series of violence attacks that have marked the history of French suburbs for more than 30 years: riots, bloody settling of scores and police blunders, adding up to pauperisation, discrimination, unemployment and desertification. This survey shot in the heart of the Grande Borne gives the floor to all - young people, policemen, shopkeepers, nurses, politicians, associations – to take a fair and unbiased look at disadvantaged and crisis-stricken suburban neighborhoods.
