Caregiver Migrants, The New Slaves
They are the new slaves of our societies, whose ageing demography is one of our major challenges. Working 24 hours a day, six days a week for low wages including board and room allowance, migrants from Eastern Europe, South America or the Philippines often live in seclusion providing non-stop home care services to the elderly. Most of them are hired by intermediary companies operating under dubious legal conditions. Caregivers who come across despots are sometimes scarred for life. To put an end to the humiliation and injustice, some migrants decided to take action. Legal advice and ethical agencies are starting to emerge in that grey economy sector, with former migrants determined to turn their dream of a better life into reality.
