Broken America : Back To The Wild West
Discover two cities sharing the same fate : both are on the verge of bankruptcy. But that is the only thing they have in common. Trenton, the capital of New Jersey, mostly black and Hispanic, is completely devastated. Considered to be one of the most dangerous cities in the United States and a playground for gangs and drug dealers, the city of Trenton was nonetheless forced to lay off more than 100 police officers, or a third of the police force, due to a lack of funds. Located only an hour from New York City, the people of Trenton are currently living in a city where public services have been reduced to a minimum.Colorado Springs is in a similar situation, but here it is by deliberate choice. In this city at the foot of the Rockies, the notion of ”less government” is nearly a religion. When the crisis hit, the city salvaged the police force, but made cuts to other public services. Streetlights were shut off, parks left abandoned, and swimming pools closed, as the citizens of Colorado Springs woke up one day to a whole new environment. But what is really astonishing is the adoption program initiated by the city. From then on, the wealthiest could pay for their streetlights and parks . . .
